"I've long been interested in healing our flawed and wasteful production systems, and helping to keep our planet healthy and beautiful. By growing soil from local inputs that would have otherwise ended up in landfills, we are capturing vital nutrients and putting them back into the food chain. By doing so, we are reducing the need for fertilizers and allowing the soil’s microbial ecosystem to protect and nourish plants. It feels good working a job where I can see a positive social impact directly in our communities!
I am currently taking classes for sustainable agriculture, and composting is an integral part of the practice. It's been good to work with Food2Soil during this time, giving me extra hands-on experience to supplement my education. I hope to one day operate a production farm that includes healing plants and herbs, and my experience in the science of creating compost will be beneficial to creating a closed-loop operation."

"Since second grade, I've had a passion and special interest in all things nature; I knew at an early age how important it was to treat the earth with respect and kindness. Fast forward to my adulthood, I've decided to further my education and pique my interest to understand our connection to plants and the many ways they serve us.

"I started Composting about 25 years ago to stop wasting water by sending my food preparation vegetables and egg shells down the garbage disposal. I had just learned how to make compost from a Biodynamic Soil Builder. I used this rich dark chocolate colored goodness in my new raised vegetable beds and saw the beautiful earth worms that helped turn the waste into gold and my plants thrived with no additional amendments. As I read more about composting, took composting classes, and studied the Soil Food Web, I realized that by making compost and adding it as a microbially rich amendment to the garden, I was turning lifeless dirt into organically rich Soil; I was literally "teaming with microbes". The activity of making compost is metaphorically like the quest of the ancient alchemists' efforts to turn base metal into gold. Top Soil Scientist have even said that if we all made compost out of our so called organic waste, we could halt and reverse global warming. The use of compost in our gardens and on our farms is using the solar energy of today to grow our crops instead of using the ancient solar energy stored in polluting fossil fuels that we now use to fertilize our plants and by doing so, damaging and ultimately killing the Soil Food Web, according to Natural Resources Conservation Services Advisor, Ray Archuleta. The Diversity of Life in the Soil Food Web if fed with compost and ground cover, and not disturbed mechanically or chemically is capable of providing all of the mineral needs of the plants in a plant available form right in the root zone, in exactly the right amount like Mother Nature has worked out for the last 450 million years. By working with Food2Soil and other organizations like this in many other cities and states, we are "spinning straw into gold" by working with natural processes instead of against them. We are a small part of a growing ecological movement which, like the Sufis say, "In the hands of the wise, the earth turns into gold."
"I have been passionate about making a difference in the San Diego community ever since I attended my first beach cleanup in 2014. My sustainability journey began with I Love A Clean San Diego where I fell in love with the idea of waste reduction and recycling. I believe that reducing food waste, improving soil health and the health of our community are all inter-connected, which is why I've been composting the food scraps of multiple households in my backyard for almost two years.
